Hibernate With Honey
If you’re tired as you read this, you might be among those who aren’t getting enough sleep — yawn.
According to a 2016 Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, one in three adults wasn’t catching enough shut-eye every night.
With some lifestyle changes and unplugging from both work and the bright screens of our electronic devices — the culprits of many a late night — you can improve your sleep.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society recommend at least seven hours nightly for adults between 18 and 60 years old.
CBD and raw honey can help.
According to a Consumer Reports national survey, “Approximately 10 percent of Americans who reported trying CBD said they used it to help them sleep, and a majority of those people said it worked.”
Why do CBD specifically in combination with raw honey work to improve sleep?
The short answer is that CBD helps relax and ease you into a sleep cycle; and RAW honey actively takes over as the optimal energy source for the nighttime recovery cycle of your brain and body.
Snuggle up for the long answer …
Did you know that sleeping is a highly active, energetic process? While you may feel like your body and mind are punching out for the day, they’re actually starting yet another physiological shift — and the liver is leading the way.
But if the liver is depleted, as many livers are, then it will release stress hormones. Your liver needs fuel like the glycogen found in RAW honey. Hold onto your nightcap, this is a little technical. But here’s a summary of the complex process.
Raw honey contains both glucose and fructose.
The glucose from the raw honey goes from the gut to the liver to the circulatory system, causing a mild glucose spike, which in turn causes a controlled insulin release from the pancreas into the circulatory system, which in turn releases tryptophan into the brain. The tryptophan (who’s getting sleepy?) is converted into serotonin, which helps promote relaxation, and is then converted by the pineal gland into melatonin — an important hormone that helps control your sleep-wake cycles. Melatonin then activates the release of growth hormone, which is in charge of the all-important recovery physiology. The repairing, building and maintenance of our body begins.
Simultaneously, the liver first converts the fructose in raw honey into glucose, then glycogen, which sustains the brain throughout the night. (The fructose also prevents a spike in glucose and insulin as referred to earlier.) When the liver is adequately supplied with glycogen, stress hormones stay put and aren’t released, creating a physiological environment that is peaceful and truly at restorative rest.
The quality sleep-inducing and supportive properties in the combination of CBD and raw honey are undeniable.
Consumer Reports suggests that when considering a CBD product for sleep, look for quality products, especially ones that aren’t contaminated with pesticides or other harmful substances.
